Composing, Music Production & Sound Design
I am versatile in my approach to composing and can suit a wide range of projects whether it is a film, TV show, video game, advert or trailer. Whatever your needs are I will be able to accommodate them and deliver appropriate original music for you. I adapt to any style and instrumentation and can produce purely orchestral or electronic works and anywhere in-between to suit the project. Click here for examples of my work.
Music production and orchestral score mock-ups
If you are a composer and have a large project and wish to focus purely on composition then I can offer my experience in music production to produce quality recordings of your composition that will be ready for synchronisation. Budgets for scores have changed over the last decade, producers expect high quality music productions and as such the demo stage no longer exists. More and more films are using sampler instruments rather than real orchestras because of budget constraints. If you have created a score in sibelius and require a recording but don't have the budget to record a real orchestra then I can create a mock-up recording. I use high quality sampler instruments by East West Quantum Leap, 8DIO, SoundIron, and Sonokinetic to produce recordings that are very realistic. I approach sound design in a manner that is not too dissimilar to the principles of hyperrealism in painting and sculpting.
Hyperrealism is founded on the principles of photorealism but it focuses much more of its emphasis on details and the subjects. Hyperreal paintings and sculptures are not strict interpretations of photographs, nor are they literal illustrations of a particular scene or subject. Instead, they utilise additional, often subtle, pictorial elements to create the illusion of a reality which in fact either does not exist or cannot be seen by the human eye. Hyperrealism may incorporate emotional, social, cultural and political thematic elements as an extension of the painted visual illusion.
Fleming, John and Honour, Hugh The Visual Arts: A History, 3rd Edition. Harry N. Abrams, Inc. New York, 1991. p. 680-710
In a way hyperrealism is the essence of film making, creating a sense of reality but ultimately it is purely fictitious. Recording sound is rather different from photography, our ears hear the world very differently from microphones. Recordings can lose some of the power and 'magic' that sounds and performances had when you heard it on location. Part of the process of being a sound designer is to enhance sounds with various signal processing techniques to achieve a 'larger than life' sound. As a sound designer I seek to create sounds that are realistic and fit the image and thus create the illusion of reality, while also emphasising or attenuating elements of the sound in an artistic manner that fits the style of the visuals and the themes of the story.
With this ethos in mind, I like to employ the use of recorded audio, synthesis and a multitude of signal processing to create sounds that are realistic and powerful. Click here for examples of my work.
Voice Acting & Dialogue Recording
I have a passion for story telling and acting regardless of medium. I frequently lend my voice to projects I work on and can bring out the best performance when recording other voice talent. I generate a friendly environment and direct the talent with constructive feedback when necessary. I maintain a careful consideration to articulation and diction for clarity in performances with extra care especially in regards to ADR.
My voice features on my Tron Legacy redubbed trailer, replacing the TV News Anchor and Sam Flynn with my own voice. Click here to watch.
I am adept at voice impressions and feature on this Star Wars parody, replacing Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine with my own performances. Click here to watch.
Below is a preview of dialogue that I recorded for Tiberian Genesis. I used a variety of signal processors to recreate the classic sound of EVA from Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun.
